For many there will be the first frost of the season tonight

ROCHESTER, NY (WHAM) – For many of us in WNY there will be the first frost of the season tonight.

Atmospheric conditions will become favorable for frost and possibly freezing well south of Rochester into the Southern Plains this evening.

A freeze warning has been issued for Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario and Yates counties from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

During the same period, a freeze warning was issued for Wyoming County.

Major high pressure will build over WNY over the next few days. This will bring drier air into the city, which should clear some of the cloud cover this evening.

Areas near the lake may see clouds linger for part of the night, which could reduce the risk of frost near Lake Ontario, particularly northeast of Rochester in Wayne County.

Without the clouds, this will be one of those classic mid-autumn nights where the temperature is a solid 10 to 15 degrees across the region. The Southern Plains could see slightly low temperatures in the upper 20s tonight.

Areas near the lake may remain in the upper 30s to around 40 due to cloud cover and relatively mild water temperatures in the 60s.

Remember to protect any frost-sensitive plants you plan to keep tonight.

If the plants are easy to move, put them in the garage or shed until morning. You can also cover planted flowers with a frost blanket, light sheets, or newspaper.

Do not use plastic sheeting to cover plants as water that condenses on the inside of the cover can easily freeze on delicate plant tissue and cause frost damage.

Historically, this freeze comes at just the right time for Rochester. We typically experience our first frost of the season between October 10th and 20th.

If you don’t like the cold, don’t worry, it won’t last long.

The air will warm again over the next few days and temperatures could rise back into the high 70s by the end of the weekend and early next week.

As the weather warms up, we expect lots of sunshine in the coming days.
