Football: Leipzig extends its successful run in Heidenheim

In Heidenheim, Belgian international striker Lois Openda scored in the 59th minute for Leipzig, who improved after the break. The Saxons, for whom Nicolas Seiwald came on in the 69th minute and Christoph Baumgartner in the 76th minute, have 14 points on their account after six matchdays with four wins and two draws. For Heidenheim it was the third league defeat of the season. With nine points, coach Frank Schmidt’s team remains in the middle of the table.

Dampener for Leverkusen and Dortmund

On Saturday, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen had to be content with a 2-2 home draw against newly promoted Holstein Kiel, while Borussia Dortmund lost 1-2 at 1. FC Union Berlin. SC Freiburg moved up to fourth place with a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen, while VfL Wolfsburg won 3-1 at bottom team VfL Bochum. Mainz won against St. Pauli 3-0.

Dortmund were unable to carry the momentum from their 7-1 thrashing of Celtic Glasgow in the Champions League and fell behind Union in the table. Instead, the Berliners celebrated their third win in the third home game.

BVB can no longer make up the 0-2 deficit

Kevin Vogt (26’/penalty) and Yorbe Vertessen (45′) scored in the first half to give the hosts a deserved 2-0 lead. Vogt, for whom it was the first league goal in ten years, ended the longest goal drought by an outfield player in Bundesliga history.

Union Berlin brought the surprise win against Dortmund over time

After the break, BVB got better, but they couldn’t score more than Julian Ryerson’s goal (62′). Christopher Trimmel played through for the winners, Leopold Querfeld was substituted in the 60th minute. Marcel Sabitzer came onto the pitch for the guests in the 76th minute.

Leverkusen lost their 2-0 lead

Benedikt Pichler was able to help Kiel steal a point from Leverkusen in the 46th minute. The champions lost a quick 2-0 lead. Leverkusen dominated the opening phase, Victor Bonifatius (4th) and Jonas Hofmann (8th) initially made things clear with their goals.

But then the slippery slope crept in, Kiel became more dangerous and managed to equalize thanks to Mark Geschwill (45th + 5) and Fiete Arp (69th / penalty). Bayer’s final offensive was ineffective.

Friedl was involved in Werder’s goal

Marco Friedl was the tragic figure in Werder’s home defeat against Freiburg. The ÖFB returnee deflected a relatively harmless shot from Ritsu Doan into his own goal (75th). Friedl and Romano Schmid played through, Marco Grüll came on in the 79th minute. On the other side, Junior Adamu and Philipp Lienhart were in action over the entire distance, while Michael Gregoritsch sat on the bench.
