Follow Ashton Jeanty’s hunt for a record-breaking season

Ashton Jeanty is on the hunt for history.

In seven games of the 2024 season, the Boise State Broncos running back has already amassed 1,376 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.

Jeanty is the clear favorite to take first place in almost every rushing statistic this season. But he could achieve even more. Legendary Oklahoma State Cowboys and Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders currently holds the FBS record for most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in a single season, with 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns in 1988.

As of October 26, Jeanty is currently on track to finish his regular season just behind Sanders’ respective numbers for rushing yards and touchdowns. But Jeanty’s numbers don’t tell the whole story. In Boise State’s game against FCS Portland State, the star running back only played the first half – totaling 11 runs. Additionally, with Boise State in position to win the Mountain West championship — and also qualify for the College Football Playoff — Jeanty could potentially play up to five more games even after the regular season ends.

Given that the next four Broncos games will be against conference opponents, Jeanty appears to be in for a heavy workload down the stretch. At his current yards-per-rush average of 8.7, if Jeanty continues to put up big carry counts in the final months of the season, he could have a real shot at breaking the record.

We’ll follow Jeanty’s performances weekly and learn where he stands on Sanders’ long-standing brand.
