Florida sheriff releases bodycam footage of attempted Trump assassin’s arrest

The moment officers arrested a suspect in connection with an attempted assassination of former President Trump in Florida was captured on a police officer-worn bodycam video released Monday afternoon.

Ryan Routh, 58, was arrested Sunday on northbound Interstate 95 after officers surrounded his vehicle, Martin County Sheriff Will Snyder said Monday during a news conference.

The sheriff’s office released the footage, which shows deputies ordering the driver to slowly back up toward the deputies with his hands on his head after he surrenders.

Routh is accused of ambushing Trump in the bushes at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while armed with an SKS rifle.

Routh fled the golf course after Secret Service agents shot him when they spotted the muzzle of his rifle through a chain-link fence a hole away, about 300 yards from where Trump was playing a round, according to authorities.

Snyder told reporters that Routh was arrested near exit 714 Palm City on I-95 and that it took authorities about two miles to mobilize all available forces to surround the vehicle and force it to stop.

“He was smart, he just went with the flow of traffic,” the sheriff said. “I think he thought he could get away with it.”

Routh appeared for a hearing in federal court in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday morning, where he was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
