Florida schools need to clean up to prepare for return to Milton

Hurricane Milton diverted much of Florida’s attention from education news last week. Many school districts affected by the storm, including all in the Tampa Bay area, will remain closed Monday and possibly longer.

In Hillsborough County, schools are cleaning up to prepare for the eventual return. Many parents and students have spoken on social media about going to their campuses to support the effort.

Officials from Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties said they would announce their plans for Tuesday by noon today. View a complete list from the Florida Department of Education of who is open and closed today.

Brevard County officials said they could prevent the Thanksgiving holiday from being used as makeup days, Florida Today reports.

Public comment: Florida Phoenix says Moms for Liberty has won a court victory in its lawsuit challenging restrictions the Brevard County School Board placed on members of the public wanting to speak at board meetings.

Vaping: Schools in Leon County have installed vape detectors in high school bathrooms as a preventive measure, according to a report in the Tallahassee Democrat.

School zones: Alachua County and the city of Gainesville have taken steps to place cameras in school zones to catch speeders, MainStreet Daily News reports.

Gender discrimination: A mother of a transgender Broward County athlete sued the school district, claiming it retaliated against her for fighting laws barring transgender students from girls’ college sports, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

University admissions: Some Florida universities have extended their application deadlines due to Hurricane Milton, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

University agenda: The redevelopment of New College of Florida is a “test run” for conservatives’ plans for higher education across the country, as outlined in Project 2025, Washington Monthly reports. • Public universities in Florida are removing several courses from general education requirements, suggesting they promote “woke ideology,” Politico Florida reports. Officials said the material will remain available through electives.

Salary increases: St. Petersburg College has ratified a new faculty contract that includes salary increases and increased funding for professional development, Tampa Bay Business & Wealth reports.
