Flooding on Labor Day on Galveston Island

A place that is usually crowded on this holiday is more like a wet ghost town this Labor Day. A few puddles formed on the streets, and you certainly don’t have to go into the beach water to get wet today.

Unfortunately, it rains a lot in Galveston on this holiday.

There are a few scattered people on the beach, but most of the people we saw were in a line leaving Galveston on this Labor Day. The line of cars, which was already jammed before noon, consisted of people leaving the island.

Some motorists had to fight through floodwaters near Harborside Drive and on Broadway.

Back on the beach a red flag is flying today.

The Galveston Beach Patrol warns of strong currents, high winds and choppy water. You can see the whitecaps of the waves rolling in. This is definitely not a place to take your children swimming today as it is dangerous.

If you look at some of these lifeguard towers, you’ll notice that the lifeguards aren’t there right now because there was lightning, so the lifeguards have left to seek shelter.

However, we spoke to a few people who said, “What does a little rain matter?” They are not letting the bad weather stop them from going on holiday this year.

“Nope. I’m glad to have the day off,” smiles a woman who has just left the beach.

“That won’t stop us. That won’t stop us, believe me. We have wine and guacamole. We’re ready,” laugh a man and woman lugging coolers and blankets to the beach.

“I love the beach in stormy weather. It’s beautiful. And it’s the first time for her dog Gil to go to the beach. He’s really looking forward to it,” explains a man who wants to go to the beach with his daughter.

“We wanted to go to the beach, but it started to rain. So now we’re going inside to a restaurant,” says a teenager who is in Galveston with her family.

So, maybe the grills won’t be firing up in Galveston this Labor Day, and the umbrella you need today is definitely not a beach umbrella, but plenty of people seem to be enjoying the holiday anyway.

The National Weather Service is predicting record rain is expected in Galveston today. With an estimated 5.5 inches of the wet stuff, Galveston is expected to have the most rain on a September 2nd since 1941.
