Five takeaways from Harris’ interview with Stephen Colbert

play

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris opened a Miller High Life beer with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night and criticized her opponent, former President Donald Trump, over his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his 2020 election loss and other issues.

The interview comes as Harris this week launched a media campaign to reach potential voters less than a month after Election Day. She has appeared on ABC’s “The View,” CBS’ “60 Minutes” and SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show.”

Since Harris entered the race in late July, she told Cobert that it has been “a whirlwind.”

“There is a lot to catch up on. You know, my opponent, the former president, has been running since 2020…People are tired of this old, tired playbook of Donald Trump,” she said.

“People are ready to turn the tide,” she added.

Here are some takeaways from the interview:

Harris reflects on the presidential debate

Both Harris and Trump faced off in their first presidential debate last month in Philadelphia, which touched on issues such as abortion and immigration.

There was one particular moment — which later went viral — in which Harris frowned, resting her chin on her hand as she heard Trump punch her on the debate stage.

“Can you tell us what you’re thinking right now?” And remember, this is CBS, so keep it clean,” Colbert said.

Harris said: “It’s family TV, right? It starts with a W, there is a letter in between, then the last letter is an F.”

Harris calls Trump a “loser” from 2020 election loss

Colbert asked Harris what he said many Republicans didn’t want to answer: “Did Donald Trump lose the 2020 election?”

Harris recalled what she heard from supporters at her rallies.

“I’ll tell you what some of the people at my rallies – by the way, quite a few people come – you know, when you lost millions of jobs, you lost manufacturing, you lost automobile factories, you lost the election. What does that make you? A loser,” Harris said.

“Someone said that at my rallies. I thought it was funny,” she added.

Harris laughed and joked, “This is what happens when I drink beer!”

Harris criticizes Trump over his relationship with Putin

During the interview, Colbert brought up a recent revelation from journalist Bob Woodward’s book that Trump has had up to seven phone conversations with Putin since leaving office in 2021.

“Donald Trump – he openly admires dictators and authoritarians. “He said he wanted to be a dictator from day one if he were elected president again,” Harris said.

“He’s played by these guys. He admires so-called strong men and is taken advantage of because they flatter him or show him favor,” she added.

Woodward also reported in his book that Trump gave Putin COVID-19 testing equipment at a time when such tests were rare.

“I ask everyone here and everyone watching: Do you remember what those days were like? “Do you remember how many people didn’t have tests and tried to get them?” Harris said angrily during the interview.

She later added that the American people should be your “first friend.”

Harris warns against disinformation after Hurricane Helene

Harris sent a warning to viewers at home regarding the federal response to Hurricane Helene: “There is a lot of misinformation out there and I’m begging you, I’m begging you, to please not pay attention to it.”

Her comments come at a time when Trump has spread unsubstantiated claims about hurricane relief efforts, including claims that there are “no helicopters, no rescue” in North Carolina and that the federal government is giving only $750 to those who give it would have lost at home.

“What upsets me the most is the idea that any politician would play political games with these people, with people who are in the midst of such suffering… for the sake of political gain, to spread these lies in a way that is intended to do so “is to convince people to distrust the help that is there for them,” she said.

Harris noted that she has spoken with governors from both parties who are committed to helping victims.

Harris calls for ceasefire and hostage taking

During the interview, Harris said there must be a hostage-taking agreement and ceasefire “immediately” in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

“This war must end. It has to come to an end. We must not lose faith in the possibility of this. Because then what you say is we throw our hands up instead of rolling up our sleeves,” she said.

Colbert said there had been brief discussions about whether a ceasefire agreement was temporarily imminent, and he asked her what “near” meant.

“Completed means that many details have been worked out, but details remain. So there has been some progress, but it is meaningless unless an agreement is actually reached. “So I don’t want to tell you that we should be praised for coming close to an agreement at times,” she said.
