First weather warning day Tuesday: Heavy rain possible

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – A low pressure system forming off the coast of the Carolinas will bring widespread rain to central Virginia on Tuesday. The needed rain will once again come at a time when most of the region is already dry.

The storm is currently expected to reach tropical storm strength and then move inland through the Carolinas. The center of the storm should pass well to the west of us. However, the storm’s impacts will be felt in the form of fresh winds as well as the possibility of heavy rain.

Currently, the heaviest rain is expected to arrive overnight Monday into Tuesday and continue into Tuesday morning. As this system moves into the area, there is a chance of some isolated areas of flooding. No flood warnings have been issued for our watch zone, but some have been issued to the south in North Carolina. Flash flooding is possible in isolated areas with poor drainage. Before it rains, check local drains for adequate drainage.

Another threat to watch for would be a tornado, which could develop quickly on Tuesday. At this time, the potential is very low.

Heavy rains on Tuesday morning could cause flash flooding in some remote areas.

Rainfall could exceed 3 inches Monday night into Wednesday, but the greatest risk for flooding will be Tuesday. Rainfall should ease by Wednesday.
