The first trailer for Samuel L. Jackson’s new Netflix film “The Piano Lesson” has been released.

The new film, which also stars John David Washington (Tenet), is set in the aftermath of the Great Depression and focuses on the Charles family and their heirloom, a piano with patterns engraved by an enslaved ancestor.

In the striking first trailer, Washington’s character Boy Willie introduces the instrument to the next generation, saying to the young girl, “Do you feel that? This is your family, this is your blood.”

We then see a series of images from the past and present as Boy Willie tells her that her ancestors “maybe they’ll be there to help her” if she’s in trouble.

“Tell your mom to tell you about the piano and ask her how the pictures got on it.”

“The Piano Lesson” is based on the play by August Wilson, who also wrote the original plays “Fences” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” The three stories make up his “Century Cycle,” which focuses on the experiences of the African-American community in the 20th century.

The film is the directorial debut of Malcolm Washington, who also adapts the story with Virgil Williams from “Mudbound”.

Also starring: Ray Fisher from “Justice League,” Danielle Deadwyler from “Till,” Michael Potts from Ma Rainey’s “Black Bottom,” and Corey Hawkins from “Macbeth.”

Denzel Washington, the father of John David Washington, is listed as producer.

In other news, Jackson was recently confirmed to star alongside Henry Golding in the new sci-fi thriller Head Games.

The film centers on an industrial spy who poses as a private chef in order to break into the villa of the former founder of a neuroprosthetics company.

“The Piano Lesson” will be released in theaters on November 8th and on Netflix on November 22nd.
