Michael Giacchino’s Fantastic Four theme features a first for the MCU

The film music for “Fantastic Four” has a unique element

The aspect of the film in question is the score composed by Michael Giacchino. At D23, Giacchino presented for the first time the main theme he chose for the score of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The theme is as good as you would expect from Giacchino, but contains something never seen before in the MCU.

At the end of the piece You can hear a choir singing the theme “Fantastic Four”. In the 16-year history of the MCU, no main theme from an orchestral score has ever been uttered with the title of the film or its main characters. While choirs have featured in MCU scores, notably in the Black Panther Singing the words of the titular team in the films is completely new to the franchise.

The Fantastic Four is a Marvel film of a different kind

Although this choral addition may seem like a small change from Marvel’s past, it actually makes sense within the themes of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. On the one hand The fact that this aspect has never been part of the main music of a Marvel film distinguishes The Fantastic Four from any other MCU movie. This is due to the fact that the film takes place in its own universe, separate from the main MCU universe, and the film’s score subconsciously underlines this point by differentiating itself from other films in the series.

Secondly, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be set in the retrofuturistic 1960s of another universe. A choir singing the name of the Fantastic Four in the film’s main theme recalls the somewhat kitschy, lurid tone of 1960s superhero projects, similar to the theme song of Adam West’s Batmanfor example. By breaking this 16-year-old MCU music trend, The Fantastic Four: First Steps proves once again that the 2025 film will be different from previous ones in the MCU while also featuring a fantastic main theme by Michael Giacchino.
