Fireworks mistaken for gunshots cause panic at Apopka-TBT game

According to multiple sources, fireworks that were mistaken for multiple gunshots caused panic at a Florida high school football preseason game between visiting Apopka and Tampa Bay Tech in Tampa on Friday night.

The host Titans led the Blue Darters 35-7 before play was halted indefinitely when a smoke bomb was thrown and the sound of fireworks, mistaken for gunfire, was heard from the parking lot.

According to an eyewitness account of the scene at Tampa Bay Technical High School, players, fans and students ran from the stands to the exits after the commotion. A video posted on social media even shows Apopka players and coaches lying face down on the grass and taking cover. Shortly afterward, the stadium was evacuated and the game was suspended.
