Fire weather, warmer temperatures this weekend

Summer-like temperatures will continue this weekend, but a lack of humidity and breezy winds mean fires can easily start and spread.

This week we rode the temperature rollercoaster and are climbing the big hill again. Temperatures are already a good 10-15 degrees above normal on Friday and we’re not done warming up yet. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 80s by Sunday and continue into early next week.

Another change to be expected is the slowing of wind speeds. Wind gusts in the 20 to 30 mph range will be experienced across the region on Friday, but will return to normal by Saturday. This is good news from a fire weather perspective, but don’t let your guard down just yet. While we expect to remain below the threshold for critical fire conditions, we are still pretty close. I would recommend avoiding fires this weekend and continuing to pay special attention to small flames such as candles, lanterns and even cigarettes. You don’t want to be the cause of a wildfire – Smokey would be disappointed in you.

Aside from a few occasional showers on Saturday, we’re in for another dry weekend, which is great for outdoor plans.

Looking into next week, these dry conditions are expected to continue for the most part. We expect a very small chance of rain towards the middle of next week, but I wouldn’t expect it at this point.
