Fire protection law applied due to new fire near Tiller

SALEM, Oregon – On Saturday evening, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act for the Tiller Trail Fire in Douglas County. The fire broke out around 3 p.m. Saturday and is estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,000 acres in size. The Oregon State Fire Marshal has activated his Green Incident Management Team and three structural responders.

On Saturday afternoon, the Oregon State Fire Marshal mobilized a structural response team from the Rogue Valley via Immediate Response.

“Over the past few days, we have experienced multiple fires on the west side of the Cascades. The fire danger across Oregon is extremely concerning. We are deploying the full force of the Oregon Fire Mutual Aid System to protect homes and critical infrastructure near the Tiller Trail Fire,” said State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple. “Historically, August has been a difficult month in terms of wildfires, and this month is expected to be no exception. I urge all Oregonians and visitors to do everything they can to prevent another wildfire.”

According to the Douglas County Sheriff, Level 1, 2, and 3 evacuation orders are in effect. Please follow the Douglas County Sheriff for the latest evacuation information.

The OSFM Green Team will be briefed at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and will take command together with an Incident Management Team from the Oregon Department of Forestry.

About the law on fighting major fires
At the instigation of Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, the Emergency Conflagration Act was enacted, allowing the state fire marshal to mobilize state resources to fight wildfires and thus protect lives and property.

The Fire Protection Code is enacted pursuant to ORS 476.510-476.610 when Governor Kotek determines that the fire poses a threat to life, safety or property and that such threat exceeds the capabilities and equipment of the local fire department.
