Find out if your home is in a flood zone

Hurricane Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and is expected to strengthen to major hurricane strength as it heads toward Florida.

Milton is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane and possibly make landfall somewhere between the Nature Coast and Marco Island on Wednesday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Hurricane Milton will have “potentially large, severe impacts,” including a storm surge of 10 to 20 feet that could inundate Tampa Bay and overflow rivers, among other areas.

Hurricane Milton: Where is it going?

What you should know if you live in Florida when it comes to hurricanes

  • Do you live in an evacuation zone?
  • Do you live in a low-lying, flood-prone area?
  • Do you live in a mobile home?
  • Do you live on the barrier island?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, officials may ask you to evacuate ahead of a storm.

Know your home. In general, homes built after 2002 have features that make them more structurally sound during a hurricane. Refer to the Florida Building Code for further details.

If you live in a home that is only accessible via a bridge, be aware that emergency responders typically close bridges to traffic once winds reach a certain speed.

Trailer park residents are being asked to evacuate their homes to safer locations due to the threat of an approaching hurricane.

How do you find out if you live in an evacuation zone?

The Florida Division of Emergency Management has a website to help you determine if you live in an evacuation zone and what zone it is.

Go to the website and enter your address. If your home is in one of the colored areas, these are flood zones where you may be asked to evacuate by local authorities.

What different colors are there for evacuation zones on the map?

Typically, Zone A is the most vulnerable and most likely to be ordered to evacuate. Zone F will most likely be evacuated last.

The biggest threat from hurricanes is storm surge

A hurricane’s storm surge is considered deadly to those in its path

Storm surge poses a deadly threat during hurricanes and threatens millions of people along the U.S. Gulf Coast. But why is it so deadly?

Scott L. Hall, USA TODAY

The biggest threat to life comes from storm surge, not winds, according to officials at the National Hurricane Center and Emergency Management.

If you live in an evacuation zone, flood-prone area, or in a mobile home and local officials issue an evacuation order, plan to leave your home.
