Final observations on Week 6 of the 2024 NFL…with Miami Dolphins Angles

So, yes, the path to the AFC East title will once again come through Buffalo, even after the New York Jets decided to make the big move.

It wasn’t as if the Bills defeated the New York Jets on Monday night at MetLife Stadium to solely retain first place in the division, but Josh Allen showed once again that he is the best player in the division and the type of difference maker is Who will make the big plays when needed?

Aaron Rodgers passed for almost 300 yards in the game and made some crazy throws. His completion up the middle to Allen Lazard right next to linebacker Terrel Bernard’s leg was amazing, but Rodgers was intercepted downfield on the Jets’ final possession.

After the game, Rodgers made it clear that new wide receiver Mike Williams had gone down the wrong path, and perhaps by chance (or not) the Jets made the long-rumored trade on Tuesday morning, acquiring star wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders taken over.

Adams will give the Jets a massive one-two punch at wide receiver in Garrett Wilson, who could actually compete with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in Miami, Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins in Houston, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk in San Francisco, and AJ Brown and Devonta Smith in Philadelphia etc.

Not to be outdone, the Bills upgraded their underwhelming wide receiver group when they acquired veteran Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a third-round pick (along with a swap of late-round picks). This is a great move for Buffalo as Cooper immediately becomes their No. 1 receiver.

And they still have the best quarterback in the division, if not the NFL, right now (yes, right now he might even be better than Patrick Mahomes, who ranks 19th in the league in passer rating).

On Monday night, Allen turned a sack into a touchdown pass to tight end Dalton Kincaid and later sealed the Bills’ victory with a 6-yard run on a third-and-4 after the interception.

We certainly wouldn’t discount the Jets, even though they fell to 2-4 – and that was before the trade for Adams. This was a game they could have easily won, and perhaps would have, if kicker Greg Zuerlein hadn’t missed two field goal attempts – of course, one could argue the Jets did thanks to a Hail Mary touchdown in the first half and a few others within striking distance were sympathetic calls from officials who insisted on playing an important role in the story.

The Dolphins moved into second place in the AFC with Monday night’s loss to the Jets, just one game behind in the loss list. But Buffalo has already put itself in a good tiebreaker position with its away wins against Miami and New York.

The Dolphins will get another shot at the Bills on Sunday, November 3rd at Highmark Stadium.

The Adams trade means the Dolphins will face the Jets with their new-look offense twice in the final five games of the regular season. That also means they will face the Las Vegas Raiders on November 17th at Hard Rock Stadium without their best offensive player.

In fact, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Adams was one of their only two offensive players of concern, along with rookie tight end Brock Bowers.

Without Adams, the Raiders are massively lacking in skill at the positions, not to mention one of the worst quarterback situations in the NFL with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell.

O’Connell, who started against the Dolphins last November, had a 79.9 passer rating in the Raiders’ 32-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday after replacing Minshew as the starter.

The Raiders also have problems on defense, of course, as former Dolphins standout Christian Wilkins is now on injured reserve, rehabilitating a Jones fracture in his foot, in hopes of a quick recovery that would allow him to play for to be ready for the game in Miami in November. 17.

It was another tough game for the New England Patriots, who will meet the Dolphins again on November 24th at Hard Rock Stadium, with the run defense once again being dismantled, this time by the Houston Texans.

After the Dolphins rushed for 193 yards against the Patriots in Week 5, Houston nearly matched that number with 192 yards in their 41-21 win. Houston scored two long runs in the game, a 59-yard gain from Joe Mixon and a 54-yard touchdown from Dameon Pierce.

At least there was reason for New England to be optimistic, and that was the performance of rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who had three touchdown passes in his NFL starting debut.

Maye is the opponent the Dolphins will face, barring injuries, in the rematch after facing former Miami backup Jacoby Brissett in their Week 5 game.

– Running back Chris Brooks was on mop-up duty in the Green Bay Packers’ 34-13 win over Arizona and had four rushing attempts for 21 yards. He is third on the Packers depth chart behind Josh Jacobs and Emanuel Wilson.

– We mentioned the Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver corps earlier and pointed out that the offensive snaps leader at that position on Monday night was former Dolphins player Mack Hollins. He only had one catch that night, but it was enough for an 8-yard touchdown.

– Tackle Laremy Tunsil left the Houston-New England game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury, but reports indicate it was more of a precautionary measure. He will likely be in the starting lineup for the Week 7 showdown between future Dolphins opponents Houston and Green Bay at Lambeau Field.
