Field reports: Wolf from pack killed near Colville

From the employee reports

A wolf from a pack near Colville was killed in response to a series of attacks on livestock.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced this week that its staff had killed an adult male from the Dominion pack in Stevens County.

The pack was accused of killing five livestock and injuring 13 others since July 19. In response, the WDFW authorized the killing of one wolf on July 31.

This week, WDFW Director Kelly Susewind gave approval to kill up to two wolves from another pack in far northern Stevens County. The Leadpoint pack is accused of killing two cattle and injuring two others.

Idaho Fish and Game Commission meeting on Thursday

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission will hold a conference call on Thursday to discuss several issues, including temporary regulations regarding the use of bait in black bear hunting.

A press release detailing the meeting said the panel will discuss correcting elk zone numbers, updating the Chronic Wasting Disease Control Program and temporary rules on “mandatory education, wildlife removal and baiting related to black bear hunting management, while also seeking to delist grizzly bears.”

The meeting came about a month after a coalition of environmental groups threatened to sue Idaho for allowing hunters to set bait when hunting black bears. They argue that bait sites pose a danger to grizzly bears, which are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Earlier this summer, a hunter shot and killed a grizzly bear over a bait site after Idaho Fish and Game Administration officials misidentified it for a black bear.

The commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. Interested parties may attend at Idaho Fish and Game headquarters in Boise or at a regional office.
