Federal funds will benefit those affected by Watch Fire

People affected by the Watch Fire that raged on the San Carlos Apache Reservation this summer will receive federal disaster assistance under Saturday’s order.

The funding comes three months after the July wildfire destroyed at least 21 homes and burned more than 2,000 acres. President Joe Biden on Saturday adopted a major disaster declaration and ordered aid to be made available.

More than 400 people were evacuated as the fire burned. Officials arrested a man in July on suspicion of setting the fire.

According to a White House press release, the newly approved assistance will likely include grants for temporary housing and building repairs. Some residents may receive small loans to cover uninsured losses. The San Carlos Apache Tribe and private nonprofit organizations will also receive funds. Distribution is being coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

San Carlos Apache Tribe officials thanked donors in July and described the level of need in the community, which is home to more than 10,000 residents, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

“What we really need going forward are millions of dollars in cash donations that will be used to rebuild homes, vehicles, critical infrastructure and landscapes damaged by the rapidly spreading fire,” said Chairman Terry Rambler.

How can affected residents apply for funds?

Residents and business owners who suffered damage from the fire can apply for funding at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.
