FDA updates egg recall, warns of serious health risks or death: Here’s what you need to know

The Food and Drug Administration updated an egg recall warning issued in early September, warning consumers that eating them could cause serious health risks and even death.

The recall was originally issued on September 6 for chicken eggs from Milos Poultry Farms in Wisconsin.

On September 30, this recall was upgraded to Class 1, meaning it involves a product that “will cause serious health consequences or death,” according to USA Today.

The CDC reports that 65 people from nine states have been infected with salmonella as a result of eating the eggs. 24 of these people were hospitalized but no deaths have been reported so far.

The recall affects all carton sizes and egg types marked “Milo’s Poultry Farms” as well as all carton sizes of Tony’s Fresh Market brand eggs.

The recalled eggs were sold to food service locations and retailers in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. However, states reporting illnesses include California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Utah and Virginia.

The CDC warned that this outbreak could be difficult to treat with traditional antibiotics and that some people may need a different antibiotic.

Anyone who has purchased or received the recalled eggs should not consume them, but rather throw them away or return them to the place where they were purchased. Any surfaces or objects that may have come into contact with the contaminated eggs should be carefully cleaned and disinfected.

Consumers should also be sure to wash their hands, utensils, and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs or raw egg-containing foods.

If you think you may have been infected with salmonella, contact your doctor immediately.

Symptoms of salmonella usually appear within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food and usually last four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Children under five, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious infections.

Anyone with questions should call Milton Farms at 715-758-6709.
