FC Barcelona accelerates signing of European Championship winner

FC Barcelona is accelerating talks with the agent of a European Championship winner and hopes to reach an agreement in the next few days. SPORTwhich cited anonymous sources, as well as reports from Italy which also cited them.

Culers are getting restless after enduring one of the most disappointing summer transfer windows in the club’s history.

Admittedly, Pau Victor could prove to be one of the bargains of the season after being brought in from Girona for a few million dollars, but Dani Olmo is the only star signing so far for a team that, until its economic crisis at the beginning of the decade, was used to signing several star players before each new season.

As things stand, Olmo, who was signed from RB Leipzig for $60 million, is barred from making his debut for the club he left as a teenager before turning professional, due to issues with compliance with Financial Fair Play regulations and therefore not being registered.

And although the Spanish co-top scorer at most European Championships can also play in this position, Hansi Flick sees him more in the attacking midfield, which means Barca still needs a left winger.

Nico Williams was naturally the biggest transfer target for Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco. But while Barca were able to negotiate a deal with Leipzig that included fewer fixed costs and variable payments at a later date, the Catalans struggled to find Williams’ $68.7 million (€62 million) release clause at Athletic Club.

Barca is therefore looking for alternatives to Lamine Yamal’s close friend. While World Sports reports that Barca have turned to a much more expensive Rafael Leao, its rival publication SPORT cites a report by Gianluca Di Marzio based on anonymous sources, which states that Barca and the agent of the 2020 Euro winner, Federico Chiesa, are “moving forward with negotiations to reach an agreement in the coming days” with his club Juventus.

SPORT adds that Chiesa could be signed for a total of $15.5 million (€14 million), which is certainly less of a burden on Barca’s empty coffers compared to Williams and especially Leao.
