FBI truck broken into in San Francisco; suspect claims he traded valuable bulletproof vest for $20 bag of meth

SAN FRANCISCO — A man has been charged here with breaking into an FBI van and stealing thousands of dollars worth of equipment, including dozens of stun grenades, a gas gun, surveillance devices and a ballistic vest that he allegedly traded for drugs, court records show.

Gregory Acosta Alvarez was charged earlier this month with theft of government property, a federal offense. His first court date has not yet been set and he is being held without bail in the San Francisco County Jail, where he faces charges of burglary, grand theft, trespassing and drug possession related to both this incident and a 2023 arrest, records show.

The criminal complaint against Acosta Alvarez states that he was caught on surveillance camera breaking into the truck at 6:45 a.m. on August 7 after FBI Special Agent Welton Pollard parked it near 442 Natoma Street in San Francisco. It wasn’t exactly the robbery of the century; authorities say multiple cameras caught Acosta Alvarez getting on a bicycle and riding to a hotel where he was staying less than a quarter mile away.

Agents arrived at the hotel at 3 p.m. that same afternoon, but by that time the bulletproof vest and gas pistol were reportedly missing. Acosta Alvarez claimed he sold them to someone for $20 worth of methamphetamine. If that’s true, he undercut the price by a large margin; federal authorities estimate the vest alone was worth $1,500.

Authorities said they seized stun grenades, a defibrillator and other equipment during a search of the hotel room.
