The 2024 NFL preseason is almost complete, which means your fantasy football drafts are just around the corner. Fortunately, the running back dead zone isn’t quite as dead as it usually is if you’re in a pure points-per-reception (PPR) league, and there are some viable mid-range options that could come into play in the receiving game.

That doesn’t mean that all draft decisions will be easy, though. Fantasy managers still have a tough choice to make early in the draft, with three very viable options to consider as the first RB between Christian McCaffrey, Breece Hall, and Bijan Robinson.

McCaffrey continues to battle a calf injury he suffered in training camp, but he currently remains No. 1 in Yahoo ADP. He has a significant lead over Hall and Robinson in terms of potential as a pure runner, but it’s worth noting that just last season Hall and Robinson ranked first and second among RBs in targets, respectively.

RBs like Alvin Kamara, Rachaad White and Jaylen Warren also fare well in PPR scoring formats as they are the primary receiving running backs in their respective offenses. New Ravens RB Derrick Henry, on the other hand, may fall a bit further behind in this scoring format as Lamar Jackson’s 4.3 passes per game to the running back position over the last three seasons are the third-lowest among all QBs with over 750 pass attempts during that time period.
