Families of trans teens sue New Hampshire authorities over sports ban

The families of two transgender teenagers in New Hampshire have filed a lawsuit against a new state law that prohibits them from participating on girls’ sports teams at public high schools.

Parker Tirrell, 15, and Iris Turmelle, 14, identified as girls from a young age and both have been diagnosed with gender identity disorder, which is feelings of distress due to a mismatch between their birth sex and their gender identity.

The lawsuit alleges that New Hampshire’s law violates constitutional and federal law by denying the youth equal educational opportunities and discriminating against them on the basis of their transsexuality.

Republican Gov. Chris Sununu signed the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act last month, saying it had received widespread support. The measure takes effect next week as nearly half the country has laws restricting transgender people in women’s and girls’ sports. The law says female athletes must play based on the sex on their birth certificate.

Tirrell, who is entering 10th grade at Plymouth Regional High School this year, played soccer on the girls’ team in 9th grade and said she wants to get back to practicing with the team before its first game on Aug. 30.

“I feel most free and happy when I play soccer with my teammates. We are there for each other, win or lose,” Tirrell said in a statement. “Not being allowed to play with the other girls on my team would separate me from so many of my friends and make school much more difficult.”

“I am a transgender girl, I have known that my whole life and everyone knows I am a girl,” Turmelle said in a statement. “I don’t understand why I shouldn’t have the same opportunities in school as other girls.”

Both take puberty-blocking medication to prevent physical changes such as muscle building, facial hair growth or a deeper voice, which could make the symptoms worse.

The lawsuit was filed the same day that the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to reject an emergency motion by the Biden administration to enforce parts of a new rule that includes protections against discrimination for transgender students under Title IX.

The request would have permitted biological men in women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and dormitories in ten states where state and local regulations exist to prevent it.

More than two dozen Republican attorneys general filed suit against the rule, arguing that it conflicted with some of their state laws that prohibit transgender students from participating in women’s sports.
