Faculty Receives Recognition for Research, Teaching, Diversity and Service: IU Kokomo: Indiana University

KOKOMO, Indiana — Indiana University Kokomo honored faculty members for outstanding teaching, research and service at its annual fall convocation.

Rosalyn Davis, clinical professor of psychology, received the Chancellor’s Diversity Excellence Award and the Virgil Hunt Distinguished Service Award.

Hyunkang Hur, associate professor of public administration and health management, received the Senior Faculty Fellowship.

Leigh Swartzendruber, Alina Mihai, Mark Meng, Andy Tuholski and Dmitriy Chulkov received IU Trustees Teaching Awards.

Davis was selected by two different selection committees for both the Chancellor’s Excellence Diversity Award and the Virgil Hunt Distinguished Service Award.

The Virgil Hunt Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding achievements by resident faculty and staff. The Chancellor’s Diversity Excellence Award recognizes the commitment of resident faculty and staff to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

Davis has served as faculty equity officer since 2014 and has been a member of the Graduate Education Committee since 2016. She was recently elected to the Graduate Faculty Council, where she represents IU Kokomo and the regional campuses, and helped develop the diversity, equity, inclusion, and equity section of the Teaching for Student Success modules available to all IU faculty members. She advises the Psychology Club, has led national and international travel opportunities, and mentored students. She has also been part of the Human Library at the Kokomo Howard County Public Library, helped plan Juneteenth celebrations for the campus and community, and supported the launch of the Groups Scholars Program.

Hur received the Senior Faculty Annual Research Award, which recognizes scholarly achievement, the faculty member’s contribution to his or her field, and the promotion of the culture of scholarship at IU Kokomo.

The selection committee was impressed by his overall research productivity and the quality of his work, which focuses on public administration and management in the areas of human resource management, organizational behavior, public policy analysis, and program evaluation. He was recognized for four conference presentations, five peer-reviewed publications, two grants, and the Kenneth J. Meier Award for the best work in public administration, bureaucratic politics, and public policy from the Midwest Political Science Association.

The Board of Trustees’ teaching awards recognize teachers who have had a positive impact on student learning – especially undergraduate students. Department heads and deans nominate candidates, who are then recommended by a selection committee.

Dmitri ChulkovProfessor of Business Analytics and Economics, was honored for his commitment to his department and students. The selection committee noted that he has transformed academic areas from management information systems to business analytics and developed a new curriculum for the field to meet the new needs of the School of Business. He teaches regularly in a variety of modalities and believes in hands-on, experiential learning. He regularly publishes and presents his research with a focus on the impact of new teaching methods. His problem-based learning methods have been adopted at several universities. He is a Quality Matters reviewer for IU Kokomo.

Mark MengAssociate Professor of Hospitality and Tourism, has been praised for his emphasis on experiential learning and respect for the diverse backgrounds and experiences of his students. He has been recognized as an advocate for the Kokomo Experience and You (KEY) program and for incorporating KEY experiences such as trips to Walt Disney World Resort into his teaching. He attended a conference in Canada this year and hosted and served on the board of the International Society of Travel and Tourism and the editorial board of Journal for teaching in the travel and tourism sector.

Alina Mihailova, Associate Professor of Education, was recognized for her training of professional and knowledgeable teachers through mentoring and her commitment to developing and delivering current and relevant courses. The selection committee also praised her for revising her courses based on student evaluations and peer reviews, and for applying current educational research—including her own—to her instructional design. She was published in the Journal for Teaching and Learning and presented his work at two international conferences.

Leigh Swartzendruberclinical assistant professor of nursing, has been praised for her commitment to education and professional development as well as her mentorship of students. She received her nursing instructor certification and was awarded the School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions’ first Innovative Teaching Award. She is the recipient of a Women of the Well House Fellowship and complements her teaching with service-learning engagement, such as overdose lifeline training and Versiti blood drives.

Andy Tuholski, Assistant Professor of Political Science, has been praised for his responsive teaching, including a comprehensive course revision to support and improve the design and development of high-quality student learning experiences. He has also been recognized for his accomplishments, including an Applied Learning Fellowship, a Women of the Well House Fellowship, an Audubon in Action Fellowship, and an Environmental Action Fellowship to support student projects. He is the recipient of the FACET Innovate Award and the Resident Faculty Amicus Award.

Education is KEY to Indiana University Kokomo.
