Explained: Why Ben Duckett didn’t open the bat in the first innings of the Multan Test | PAK vs ENG

Ben Duckett doesn't open

Ben Duckett did not open the batting in the first innings of the game first test match between Pakistan and Englandin Multan.

After Shan Masood won the toss and elected to bat first, Pakistan struggled for almost two days in the Multan Test match, reaching 556 runs. Masood himself managed 151 of those runs and Abdullah Shafique 102, while Salman Ali Agha remained unbeaten on 104. This is the 19th time that three Pakistanis have scored hundreds in the same Test innings. For England, Jack Leach took 3-160.

An unpleasant catch

The tenth wicket fell in a somewhat unusual manner when part-time off-spinner Joe Root bowled a short ball to No. 11 Abrar Ahmed. The ball traveled too fast for Ben Duckett to react as he slipped and bounced off his left thumb before Duckett completed the catch with his right hand.

Duckett didn’t have time to recover and when England opened he didn’t go out to bat with Zak Crawley. Ollie Pope, who had taken over in the absence of regular captain Ben Stokes, also stepped in for his second role as Test opener.

Unfortunately, he only lasted two balls before Aamir Jamal brilliantly caught him at mid-wicket off Naseem Shah for a duck. Joe Root got out at the fall of Pope’s wicket.

As Duckett had taken the final catch of the Pakistan innings, he had not spent any time off the field and is eligible to bat. While there is no current information on his injury, his failure to go to bat on first drop may raise a few cautious eyebrows.

At the time of writing, England were 15-1 with Crawley (8) and Root (7).
