Expect traffic delays near downtown SLC and Spanish Fork this weekend

SALT LAKE CITY – Travelers in Utah should expect significant delays this weekend near downtown Salt Lake City and on one of Utah’s main recreational routes to and from Moab and Lake Powell on the Spanish Fork.

US Highway 6

Interstate 15 connects southeastern Utah to popular recreation areas such as Moab and Lake Powell via U.S. 6 at Spanish Fork. The route passes Soldier Summit and is four lanes in sections, so there is a lot of traffic in both directions. However, at the 400 North Bridge in Spanish Fork, the road will be reduced to one lane from Sunday through Aug. 15 for bridge repairs, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

“Significant delays are expected,” the agency said in a press release. “UDOT is encouraging vacationers and commuters to use Spanish Fork Main Street to Canyon Road or State Route 77 to US 89 as alternate routes to avoid major delays.”

The work will last from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, but lane closures will remain in place the entire time as workers replace the bridge deck. The same lane closures will be repeated August 18-22. US 6 runs east-west through the middle of the state. Also called the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, it crosses much of the US from east to west, running from Bishop, California, to Provincetown, Massachusetts.

500 South in Salt Lake City, including the ramps to I-15 southbound and I-80 westbound, will be closed from 500 West to the freeway ramps from 11 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday as workers replace signs on the pavement throughout the night.

In addition, the pavement marking crew will travel “throughout the Salt Lake Valley” to install wider pavement markings for better visibility and reflectivity on both I-15 and Interstate 215. UDOT will close adjacent lanes and on- and off-ramps during this work. Crews will work throughout the night, beginning at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, crews will be working on I-80 eastbound in Parleys Canyon near Lambs Canyon.

On Sunday and Monday, crews will work on I-15 northbound from the I-215 interchange to the I-80 eastbound interchange. Temporary ramp closures are expected on I-215 westbound to I-15 northbound, I-80 eastbound at 4500 South and 3300 South, and the Spaghetti Bowl ramps.
