Every word of Arteta’s post-Southampton press release | Press conference | News

After watching us extend our unbeaten run to 16 games, Mikel Arteta spoke to the press about our 3-1 win over Southampton.

He was asked about Bukayo Saka’s form, how he came back to life after conceding a goal, how Kai Havertz scored again and much more.

Here’s everything he had to say:

about performance:
I found the first half exceptional. The dominance we had in the areas we played, the amount of situations and chances we created in open play and set pieces, and our counter-pressing worked really well there. It’s unbelievable that we didn’t score a goal.

Then we started the second half, we were a bit sloppy with the ball, especially in the first 5-10 minutes, and then the game became a bit more open. Then they took the chance, scored the goal, and then again we wasted everything we managed in the first half. It was a completely new game in a really difficult context and the team reacted incredibly well and with a lot of composure; great faith, very good clarity about what we needed to do. The crowd was exceptional, the subs were exceptional and we were able to win again.

on Bukayo’s performance and his leadership in the team:
This is the maturity and the steps that the players have to take. He’s been with the team long enough now, he’s earned the right to play this role, he believes in that. He has the ability to change games and decide games, like many other players. If you want to get to the top, sometimes players have to create those moments and he certainly did that today.

on the appearances of Jesus and Sterling:
I was really happy. We made the changes, we had to make them and everyone deserves to play. In the first half it could have been completely different to the result we had at half time. After that we decided to make a change because the energy needed to change and we brought in three players who are capable of doing that and they really helped. I’m really happy with all of them.

Highlights: Arsenal 3-1 Southampton

about the need for a wake-up call for a second week:
The wake-up call was that we conceded a goal. But the way we started the games and dominated the opponent, I think against Leicester we broke every record that had been set before and something similar will happen today. But you have to score three, four or five goals and if not, the game continues in the Premier League. But if we have a wake-up call, it’s the goal they scored and of course we had to respond to that. We did it, and we did it convincingly.

about Bukayo’s rise to a new level:
It’s another step forward in what he wants, especially if. Do it at home, do it away, do it in big games, do it in some other games when the team needs it, not when it’s 3-0 – that’s what makes a top player .

on Kai’s performance and self-confidence:
You notice (his confidence has increased) that he takes the ball and runs with the ball. He presses a lot, he goes full throttle, the way he holds the ball, the position he takes in the penalty area. He’s an attacking midfielder, he plays as a nine, you don’t know where he is, that’s his football brain. His focus now is “I’m going to win the game, I’m going to do it,” and that’s different.

on Havertz, who scored in seven games in a row at the Emirates Stadium:
When he practices he wants more and he’s not satisfied with what he’s doing because I think he’s at another level. Obviously he’s surrounded by incredible players but something has changed about him and that confidence, you can really feel it, and now he’s bringing his best to games and winning football games, which is great.

Confident: Martinelli is happy to be back in the goals

on Saka’s stats at his age:
There are statistics and there is no getting around them. What he is doing at his age is incredible. We have many examples of this too.

about the conversation with Ramsdale at the end:
I wished him all the best and congratulated him on his style of play. I wish him all the best and hope they do, especially for the manager and also for Aaron because they are a very good team.

When Tempted to Rest Bukayo:
Yes, there is and we’ve taken him out a few times this season and have to deal with the load that’s on him, but he’s in a good position at the moment.

about the schedule and injuries:
It was a very challenging time after the international break, we had so many problems; Lots of injuries, very difficult games, especially away, and some of them play with 10 men and the team adapts. The team is so willing. I am very happy with the way we have come through this period and we are in a good position.
