Everton 0-0 Newcastle (Oct 5, 2024) Match analysis

Anthony Gordon missed a penalty against his former team, sparking huge celebrations from the home fans as Newcastle United were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton in a heated Premier League clash at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Newcastle were rightly awarded a penalty in the first half when James Tarkowski brought down Sandro Tonali in the penalty area, but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved Gordon’s weak penalty with his legs.

The visitors had several other chances to win the game and were the better team, but Everton might have taken all three points themselves as an Abdoulaye Doucouré header was ruled out for offside and Idrissa Gueye missed an open goal.

This point puts Newcastle in sixth place in the table with 12 points from seven games, while Everton are in 16th place with five points.

Gordon was the villain of the piece, perhaps for both sets of fans, after his acrimonious exit from Goodison Park in January last year.

He would have relished the chance to score a winner against his former employers, but he botched his lines several times, and not just from the penalty spot.

He also had a chance late on when he was just able to beat Pickford from a tight angle, but the shot went over the bar.

“We will always support Gordan to score goals. “He’s been a great player for us since he signed,” said Newcastle defender Dan Burn. “It’s one of those things. We wanted to get a result for him because it hurts him a little bit.”

“It was a better performance away from home. We fought well, but I’m disappointed that I didn’t get the three points.”

Newcastle were close to taking the lead when Bruno Guimarães’ shot at the back post beat Pickford but not Iliman Ndiaye on the goal line. The Senegalese winger blocked the shot with a boot and the ball slid to safety.

Doucoure had the ball in the net after a superb cross from James Garner, but was a meter offside before Tarkowski’s moment of madness gave Newcastle the opportunity to take the lead.

The foul was not noticed immediately, but a VAR review revealed the penalty was awarded, only for Gordon to bounce low and just wide of center to his right, allowing Pickford to make a comfortable save at the end.

It was a joyous moment for the Everton fans, whose celebration was arguably louder than any goal they have scored at Goodison Park this season, as a chorus of “England’s number one” rang across the pitch.

Guimaraes fired the ball over the bar from 15 yards before Everton took a penalty themselves when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot appeared to be obstructed by Burn.

The referees thought otherwise and afterwards Gueye missed a sitter when he shot over the goal from eight meters.
