ESPN’s College GameDay: Thousands cheer on Cal at 1st ESPN event in Berkeley: Here’s a look

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) — Thousands of students and fans descended on UC Berkeley Saturday morning for ESPN’s “College GameDay” show.

The show goes to different university locations every week, but in over 30 years I have never been to Cal. The Golden Bears face the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday evening.

ABC 7 News reporter JR Stone was at Berkeley’s Memorial Glade Saturday morning. The students arrived on Friday for the show, which began at 6 a.m

ESPN College GameDay personality Pat McAfee delights Cal audiences with NFL star and Cal Bears alum Marshawn Lynch, Beast Mode.

All for the first time ever in Berkeley.

“We are here all day and all night and nothing can stop us from having a great time. Go Bears!” said one fan.

Cal hosts ESPN College GameDay on Saturday and here at ABC7 there’s a rivalry between Cal and Miami.

This interview was taken during one of our live tapings on ABC7 Mornings.

“I saw you finished your breakfast sandwich…yeah my burrito, it’s fun to be out here, it’s great. You didn’t think Cal had any fans? This proved them wrong.”

Thousands turned out, but perhaps the most energetic and die-hard fans were the students.

“We got here at 11:30 and we’re fully motivated, let’s go!” said another fan.

ESPN’s popular pregame show “GameDay” is coming to Berkeley for the first time and excitement is building as students and fans countdown to the show and game.

“What do you think? You don’t have any shirts on. “Do you think Cal has a chance?” Stone asked.

“Naturally! We have Mendoza! Go Bears!”

“I’m so excited. This is so incredible. I’ve never seen so many people come to Cal. There are no pastries, the atmosphere is good, I love it!” said a woman in Californian clothing.

“Viyan Los Osos, which means Go Bears in Spanish,” said a man in a Cal wrestling outfit.

“Welcome to California. Nothing can stop me from being full of energy from 6am to 7:30pm. We were born and raised to have a great time. Let’s go, bears!” shouted one fan.

VIDEO: This Berkeley store is baking 1,000 free donuts for ESPN’s College GameDay

The first 1,000 fans at ESPN College GameDay in Berkeley on Saturday will get free donuts thanks to Dream Fluff Donuts, whose owner is bringing in extra bakers and willing to work overtime.

But it appears some who were here Friday night didn’t quite make it to the College GameDay broadcast from 6 to 9 p.m. These people fell asleep on the floor and on chairs.

After seeing this turnout and seeing these signs saying things like “You couldn’t come to Cal” and “If we lose, I’ll protest,” I think there’s a good chance the crew will come back a second time .

“It’s pretty wild to see so many people from the Bay Area. Go Bears! Yes, Go Bears, exactly!” said Kathryn Clark, a junior at Cal.

“It’s super exciting. I didn’t expect so many people to come, but I’m really happy. I’m sure they’ll be happy,” said Ria Raniwala, also a junior at Cal.
