Enga experiences career night and leads CC over Mountain Lions

Experienced midfielder Kaelin Enga scored a career-high four points to lead the Colorado College women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Wednesday night. CC extended its winning streak to three straight and remained undefeated in Stewart entering the 2024 season.

“It’s exciting that we continue to gain momentum and extend the lead (in the games),” said head coach Keri Sanchez said. “The defense played hard tonight… I’m glad we kept scoring and scored the most goals we’ve scored in a long time.”

The Tigers secured their first three-game winning streak and their first four-goal performance since 2019. Enga had 15 career points (five goals, four assists) on Wednesday. She scored her sixth career goal and assisted on two more.

“She came back from an injury and wasn’t able to play all spring, so we’re seeing her slowly get into shape,” Sanchez said. “That’s great for us since we’re in the middle of the season now.”

Enga’s four points are the most in a single game since Shalom Prince scored two goals against San Jose State on October 19, 2023, leading a comeback win for CC.

CC’s first goal came in the 30th minute when the newcomer Finley Schoenbeck fired the ball past UCCS goalkeeper Alex Malaspina for her second career goal. Enga picked up her first assist of the night after sending a superb cross to Schoenbeck in the box.

Schoenbeck became the first CC rookie to score multiple goals in a season since Enga accomplished the same feat in 2021.

The Tigers went into the break with a 1-0 lead. The score remained unchanged 25 minutes into the second half. Despite this, CC scored three goals within four minutes and 37 seconds. The first of these three goals came in the 70th minute when Kylie Smith headed the ball into the net after Enga passed to the junior for her second career goal. Smith became the second Tiger this season to score in back-to-back games.

Enga scored an own goal in the 72nd minute on a counterattack by Smith. Smith delivered a beautiful cross to Enga’s head, who fired the ball in to increase the lead to 3-0. The fourth and final goal for CC came from a corner kick in the 74th minute. Dayleigh Bos found a loose ball in front of the net and scored her first career goal as a Tiger.

CC had a total of 19 shots and 11 shots on goal this season.

Experienced goalkeeper Zahra Cheeseman made her first career start and finished the game with three saves to win.

Four Tigers started for the first time in their careers on Wednesday: Cheeseman, freshman Meli Coats, Charlotte Strabel And Emily Archuleta. Veronica Bianco And Gracie Huebner They were also able to make their first appearances this season.

CC is eyeing its first road game since August 16th when the Tigers travel down I-25 on Sunday, September 1st to face the University of Denver Pioneers in Denver at 1 p.m.

“We’re excited,” Sanchez said. “DU has been coming on well and playing some really good early games for them, so this is going to be a tough opponent for us and a really good test for us to see where we are before we go into Mountain West play.”

The Pioneers host Cal State Northridge on Thursday night and have a record of 2-2.
