    Voters across Florida and the United States head to their polling place today for Election Day 2024.

    The results will be announced throughout the night and beyond, but residents are already wondering who will lead the election or who will win the election.

    The poll results have been close for months, especially in the swing states in the Electoral College elections.

    Maybe, but there’s a chance it’s too close to call. Media organizations will likely announce results based on data from election analysts and researchers before official results are announced by states and local governments.

    In 2020, it took four days for President Joe Biden to be declared the winner.

    In 2016, Donald Trump was declared the winner in the early hours of the morning the day after the election.

    In 2000, it took 35 days for Republican George W. Bush to be declared the winner, the longest delay in history.

    What is a Swing State? Is Florida a swing state?

    There are seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

    A swing state is one in which voter support can go to either the Democratic or Republican candidate.

    These states often have a narrow vote margin that could theoretically influence the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

    Florida is not a swing state as it has historically favored the Republican candidate.

    What is the Electoral College?

    The Electoral College was a compromise by the Founding Fathers. Instead of voters deciding who should be the next president (called the popular vote) or Congress deciding who should be the next president, the decision is made by the Electoral College.

    A total of 538 electoral votes will be cast in each of the 50 states and Washington, DC. Votes are based on the number of congressmen each state has in Washington.

    In most states, the winner receives all the electoral votes. The only exceptions are Maine and Nebraska, whose electors are based on both the statewide and congressional district popular vote.

    Florida has 30 electoral votes, behind 54 for California and 40 for Texas. New York is right behind Florida with 28 electoral votes.

    What happens if neither Trump nor Harris gets 270 electoral votes?

    If no candidate receives 270 votes, the House of Representatives conducts a majority vote to elect the president.
