INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Braun has won the open race for governor of Indiana, according to a poll call obtained by The Associated Press.

Braun, a Trump ally finishing his first term in the Senate, defeated Democrat Jennifer McCormick and Libertarian Donald Rainwater.

Earlier in his career, Braun served in the Indiana Legislature and as a member of the local school board. Much of the Republican’s campaign pitch revolved around his experiences building and growing an auto parts distribution company in southern Indiana into a multimillion-dollar enterprise.

Braun’s victory rewrites a piece of Indiana history: The state has never had a single-party governor for more than 20 consecutive years. But Democrats haven’t won the governor’s race since 2000, and with Braun’s victory, Republicans will extend their gubernatorial term past the two-year mark.

Incumbent GOP Gov. Eric Holcomb has been term-limited after eight years in office.
