Election campaign review from Monday, 9.9.24

Today’s episode of election-related news from around the country.

* Despite Donald Trump’s terrible August, the latest nationwide New York Times/Siena College poll of likely voters found the former president narrowly ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris, 48% to 47%. (Click the link for information on the poll’s methodology and margin of error.)

* Speaking of 2024 polls, the latest CBS News/YouGov poll has Harris narrowly ahead of Trump in Wisconsin, 51% to 49%, and in Michigan, 50% to 49%. The same set of results showed the two major party candidates tied at 50% to 50% in Pennsylvania. (Click the link for information on the poll’s methodology and margin of error.)

* The final primaries of the 2024 cycle are taking place this week in New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Delaware, and there are some notable elections for congressional and gubernatorial seats.

* The Harris campaign’s official website now has an “Issues” page that explains the Democratic candidate’s vision on various issues.

* The Harris team also unveiled a new, one-minute TV ad ahead of the vice presidential debate with Trump that spotlights prominent members of the Republican team who have (a) denounced him; (b) opposed his re-election; or (c) both. According to a report from Politico, “The ad will run nationally on Fox News and in West Palm Beach — home of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort — and in Philadelphia media markets on Tuesday, the day he debates Harris for the first time.”

* In Texas, the latest poll from the University of Texas at Austin showed Trump ahead in the Lone Star State, 49% to 44%. But just as importantly, the same poll showed incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz with a sizable lead over Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, 44% to 36%. (Click the link for information on the poll’s methodology and margin of error.)

* Late last week, appeals courts in Michigan and North Carolina ruled in favor of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and removed the independent presidential candidate’s name from the ballots in the two swing states.

* Elon Musk’s America PAC is investing in new digital ads supporting Trump’s candidacy, warning voters that “the crazies” will prevail if the former president loses.

* And in her latest appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Nikki Haley dodged questions about whether Trump is a viable candidate. The South Carolina Republican nonetheless declared her willingness to campaign for her party’s candidate – who, at least so far, has not asked her to do anything for him.
