Election 2024: Your Guide to Voting in Central New York (Polls, Times, Candidates)

Syracuse, NY – Voters will go to the polls today in Central New York and beyond to elect the next U.S. president, as well as members of Congress and a handful of state and local officials in New York.

Election Day caps a long and contentious campaign season in Syracuse and across the country. In central New York, more than $18 million was spent on the 22nd Congressional District campaign. According to NPR, more than $10 billion was spent on political advertising nationwide this year.

While the election campaign ends today, many here have already voted. In Onondaga County, a third of registered voters have already cast their ballots in early voting.

Here’s what you should know before Election Day.

When can I vote?

Polling stations open at 6 a.m. today and close at 9 p.m

Who can vote?

Anyone who registered to vote before the Oct. 26 deadline can vote in Tuesday’s election.

You cannot vote on Election Day if you voted early or by mail.

Wondering if you’re registered to vote? Find out about your registration status here.

Where do I choose?

Once you have registered to vote, you will be assigned a polling station. You may have received a postcard in the mail with your voting location. You can also find your polling place on the New York State Board of Elections website.

Do I have to bring my ID with me to the polling station?

Government-issued IDs are not required to vote in New York.

However, certain newly registered voters who are voting for the first time may be required to provide identification if they did not present it when registering. Wondering if this applies to you? Find out more about it here.

What happens if my name is not on the voter lists?

Voters not on the registration list may ask poll workers to check with the county board of elections. If the problem cannot be resolved, voters will be allowed to cast affidavit ballots. These ballots will be counted if they are certified as legitimate after Election Day.

Who is on the ballot?

The marquee race in Central New York is a contest between Brandon Williams and John Mannion for New York’s 22nd Congressional District. The two take part in one of the toughest races in the country.

But there are several other interesting CNY election races.

Here is a complete list of eligible voters in Onondaga, Cayuga, Madison and Oswego counties. You can also view sample ballots from each area.

What is Proposal 1?

Be sure to turn over your ballot after selecting candidates. There you will see a proposal to amend the New York Constitution. It is said:

“This proposal would protect against unequal treatment based on race, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability and gender, including sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy. It also protects against unequal treatment based on reproductive health care and autonomy.

A “YES” vote will add these protections to the New York State Constitution.

A “NO” vote will remove these protections from the state constitution.”

Where can I find results?

Syracuse.com will publish the live results of each race as they come in after polls close today at 9 p.m. We will announce the winners as soon as they are announced. You can also check back on Wednesday morning for a full results list.
