Eggs recalled in Michigan can cause “serious health consequences” if consumed

Two brands of eggs sold in Michigan stores and distributed to the foodservice retail industry have been recalled due to possible salmonella contamination. According to the Food and Drug Administration, all types of Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market brand eggs with a best-before date on the packaging are being recalled due to the problem.

The recalled eggs were also sold and distributed in Illinois and Wisconsin, but the Center for Disease Control says illnesses have been reported in nine states. So far, at least 65 people have fallen ill with the same salmonella strain and 24 of those people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported in connection with the issue.

The recall was first announced in early September, but was upgraded to Class I by the CDC on September 30, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consumption of the recalled product “will cause serious health consequences or death.”

The recall was initiated after the FDA notified Milos Poultry Farms, LLC. from Bonduel, WI that environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria. After the FDA conducted whole genome sequencing, it was determined that the samples were linked to an ongoing investigation into the salmonella outbreak.

The company has suspended all production and distribution while it undergoes “appropriate testing and disinfection of farms and processing equipment,” according to the FDA. Anyone who purchased the recalled eggs is urged not to consume them.

Salmonella is a potentially dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of a person infected with salmonella include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the FDA.
