In the episode of June 5th of Therapuss with Jake Shane, Ed admitted, “I haven’t had a phone since 2015,” and I’m shocked.

Ed revealed his cellphone freedom when the host Jake offered to exchange phone numbers. “I don’t have a number, but you can have my email,” Ed said, adding, “I don’t want to take advantage of you either.”

The “Shape of You” singer’s team recently gifted him a phone for important moments, such as when he attended the Boston Celtics game with singer Reneé Rapp on the sidelines of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on Thursday, May 23.

“I have something I like to do with videos that I would then post on social media,” he said. “But it’s not like an active work phone.”

Ed said he decided to throw away his phone in December 2015 after realizing he had too many contacts from before his breakthrough. “I think I had the same number when I was 15,” he said, “and then I got famous and had 10,000 contacts in my phone that people were texting all the time. And I was just constantly in touch with a lot of people.”

“I feel like with phones, everyone expects you to answer, and if you don’t answer, it’s rude,” he said.

“Sometimes you’re just not in the mood to respond, you’re busy or doing whatever,” Ed continued, “but then you respond, then they respond back… and suddenly you’re involved in 40 conversations at once.”

Ed discovered “a better way” to limit “the time” spent texting and cell phone addiction by switching to email. “I just lost the real-life interaction, so I got rid of my phone, got an iPad, and switched everything to email, which I answer once a week.”

“Thursdays or Fridays I sit down, usually in the car. I answer all the emails. I catch up on everything. I talk to all kinds of people… and that’s it,” Ed continued. “You can really limit your time.”

“I went to dinner yesterday after the Celtics and you just leave your iPad in your hotel room. I had dinner with my best friend. We talked, chatted for a long time and that was it.”

“Nobody expects an immediate response to an email,” said Ed. “It’s a cultural thing when the WhatsApp checkmark appears and then you have to respond.” According to Ed, you can avoid people getting upset about being left “read” by writing an email that lowers the expectation of an immediate response.

Ed concluded that without a smartphone, he was exposed to “boredom” and that this was when he got his best ideas. “When you’re just sitting there doing nothing… I’ll come up with a lyric or a melody or an idea about what you want to do next in your career.”

“Being constantly online has never produced anything creative. Boredom is what makes you think of an iPhone.”

Sure, Ed has a knack for texts, but he’s not bad as a life coach either. That’s a fair observation on our obsession with instant communication and adapting to our current cellphone-driven lifestyle. I think I should email my parents every week instead of texting them.
