Georgia in the election spotlight

Early voting is already underway in many states. Polls are opening their doors this week in Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Rhode Island, Tennessee, North Carolina, Louisiana, Washington, Massachusetts and Nevada.

Election Day is just three weeks away. Georgia set the stage for now, with throngs of voters at the polls as local officials prepare for Nov. 5.

  • Voters in Georgia were in record numbers on Tuesdaywith nearly twice as many people attending the first day of early voting in the 2020 election in the battleground state.
  • But do all of those votes in Georgia have to be counted by hand? A judge expressed skepticism about a controversial new Georgia State Election Board rule that requires three different people in each precinct to count their ballots by hand and certify that their counts match each other’s.
  • Tuesday also delivered a setback This comes amid a Republican-led effort in the state to expand the powers of local election officials after a state judge ruled that county election boards in Georgia cannot delay or refuse to certify election results.

From neighborhood associations to a city department dedicated to integrating newcomers, Dayton, Ohio, takes a welcoming, grassroots approach to immigrants. This is based on their understanding that immigrants are uniquely suited to revitalize local economies where populations have declined and to improve housing stock, particularly in areas where houses are vacant. And it stands in stark contrast to the anti-immigration political rhetoric that has captivated the neighboring city of Springfield, Ohio, just a half-hour away. Read more

The politics of the “Panda Express”

Two giant pandas, a female named Qing Bao and a male named Bao Li, landed in the United States on Tuesday.
