HOUSTON – (July 1, 2024) – U.S. Navy Lt. Anca Selariu, a microbiologist with Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Branch, gets a haircut from a crew member during the first NASA Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) mission at Johnson Space Center. The four-person crew spent 378 days in Mars Dune Alpha, a 157-square-meter, three-dimensionally printed structure. The CHAPEA missions, simulated expeditions to the Martian surface, aim to collect critical data to serve as the foundation for future manned expeditions to space. NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap-directed combat casualty care, craniofacial and directed energy research to improve the survivability, readiness and safety of DoD personnel during routine and expeditionary operations.
