DVIDS – News – SMDC leaders discuss future of IAMD, Army space at AUSA

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – During the Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting and Exhibition, the senior leader of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command will speak about how the Army must expand its space capabilities to integrate them into multi-domain operations.

Lt. Gen. Sean A. Gainey, commanding general of USASMDC, will highlight how the Army’s space and missile defenses contribute to a combat-ready and lethal force in his daily presentations at the three-day event Oct. 14-16.

“As we look to 2030, we know from all of the Army’s warfighting concepts that we need to expand space capabilities,” Gainey said.

Held in Washington, DC, the event brings together military experts, defense industry executives and key partners from around the world to discuss the future of warfare and defense technology and provides a platform to highlight the command’s efforts.

On October 14th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Lt. Gen. Gainey will participate in the Integrated Air and Missile Defense panel discussion in Room 147 AB. Additional panelists include the Honorable Gabe Camarillo, Under Secretary of the Army, and Maj. Gen. Francisco Lozano, commanding general of the Program Executive Office Missiles and Defense. Dr. Tom Karako, director of the Missile Defense Project for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, will moderate.

“Everyone is concerned about the complexity and magnitude of the air and missile threats,” Gainey said during another recent AUSA mission. “We are modernizing and pursuing a single, integrated fire control system that provides our Soldiers with 360-degree capabilities on the battlefield.”

On Oct. 15, Gainey and Army space leaders will participate in the Warriors Corner event titled “Army Space Vision: Delivering Space Effects for Combat Ready Formations” at the Army Exhibit, Booth 1825, from 11:35 a.m. to 12:15 p.m .

Gainey will be joined by Col. Pete Atkinson, chief of the Army Space Division, G-3.5.7; Col. Don Brooks, commander of the Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence; and Command Sgt. Maj. Maurice Tucker, 1st Space Brigade master sergeant.

The panel will focus on the progress of the Army Space Vision and how the Army’s coherent space policy, SMDC training and 1st Space Brigade operations continue to transform to impact the maneuver force war effort.

The Army Space Vision Supporting Multidomain Operations provides a blueprint for the decisions senior Army leaders make for the Army space program. Through operations, capability development, new space formations and training, USASMDC was given the opportunity to shape this future.

“When you show value, the Army provides two things: structure and money,” Brooks said. “That’s why the Army is devoting resources to Army space formations, people and capabilities because we have demonstrated value.”

On the final day of AUSA, Gainey will attend the Army Civilian Showcase with the theme “Army Civilian Innovations and Changes that Keep Army Top 10 Best Places to Work” at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Salons 5-6 from 10-11:30 a.m

USASMDC was the Army’s highest-ranking command among the top employers in the federal government for two years in a row. Gainey will discuss the best employers and best practices. The Secretary of the Army will be in attendance to recognize the top five commands in the Best Places to Work survey.

“SMDC has been ranked the best place to work in the Army for the second year in a row,” Gainey said. “I am proud of the team we have and grateful for your efforts in helping our command not only achieve this recognition, but also truly be a great place to work.”
