HAMLET – Traffic was detoured through a section of Seaboard City all day after a dump truck downed utility lines.

According to Hamlet police, the driver of a dump truck drove out of the parking lot of the gas station on Spring Street (US 74 Business) with the bed up just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, knocking down power lines and breaking three poles.

According to police, Duke Energy had to be called to turn off the power because the truck was on the road and wires were trapped between the bed and the cab.

The driver was able to leave the truck unharmed, police said.

The road was closed from Raleigh Street to Hamlet City Lake, with traffic diverted via Hamlet Avenue.

At 3:40 p.m., the stretch of road was still closed as workers worked to replace the poles. Police said it would take “a few more hours” for the work to be completed.

No injuries or other damage were reported.

According to police, the driver was charged with negligent and reckless driving as well as possession of a non-existent driver’s license and a non-existent commercial driver’s license (CDL).
