Match Summary: Football |

EVANSTON, Ill. – Duke trailed 13-10 with less than 15 seconds left in regulation and trailed 20-13 after Northwestern’s first possession of overtime. But Duke countered both times to pull out a 26-20 double-overtime victory Friday night at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium. Michael Murphy hit Eli Pancol for a three-yard touchdown on Duke’s second possession of overtime and the defense kept the Wildcats out of the end zone to clinch the win.

The Blue Devils defense forced two turnovers, recorded 11.0 tackles for loss and intercepted seven passes in a strong performance.

Todd Pelino tied the game 13-13 with a 22-yard field goal with 14 seconds left and sent the game into overtime. Murphy was on fire in the second half, throwing for 197 yards and two touchdowns after halftime, one in each overtime period, as Duke rallied to win.

The win was Duke’s first in overtime since a 44-41 victory over Indiana on December 26, 2015 in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Northwestern had the ball and scored a field goal after a drive lasting just over three minutes. Duke’s defense struck back on the Wildcats’ next possession and Terry Moore jumped in front of a pass from Northwestern at NU’s 26-yard line, giving Duke its first possession of the season.
  • The Blue Devils offense then struck quickly on the short field and scored just four plays later. Michael Murphy attached to Eli Pancol with a 16-yard pass and gave the Blue Devils a 7-3 lead with 4:50 minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Northwestern recovered a botched punt at Duke’s 11-yard line with just over seven minutes left before halftime and converted it two plays later to retake the lead, 10-7.
  • The gap remained the same until halftime. Northwestern’s defense forced a three-and-out early in the second half and blocked the ensuing punt, putting the home team at Duke’s nine-yard line with 13:46 left on the third quarter clock. Duke’s defense held firm, however, forcing a Wildcats field goal attempt that bounced off the post from 29 yards out.
  • The teams exchanged turnovers on the next two drives, which Duke eventually scored in the middle of the field after a fumble recovery by Ozzie Nicholas. The Blue Devils tied the score at 10:10 thanks to a 49-yard field goal by Todd Pelino seven minutes before the end of the third quarter.
  • Northwestern took the lead again with a 32-meter field goal at 11:39 of the fourth quarter, making it 13-10.
  • After Duke lost three plays and missed a 33-yard field goal, Pelino made a 22-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
  • Murphy connected with Jordan Moore on the first play of Duke’s first possession of the overtime period. Murphy then found Pancol on the game-winning play of the second overtime period.
