Drury and Kavadas hit home runs as the Angels beat the struggling Twins 6-2

Reid Detmers pitched six solid innings and Brandon Drury and Niko Kavadas each hit a home run to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-2 victory over the struggling Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Detmers (4-6) got off to his second straight good start after spending three months at Triple-A Salt Lake. The 25-year-old left-hander allowed five hits and struck out eight batters — including the last three batters he faced — to earn his first win since April 12 against Boston, when he started the season 3-0. He allowed three hits and struck out 10 batters in six innings in a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Tuesday. This was his first appearance since June 1 after being demoted to the minor leagues following months of inconsistency.

“You always want to finish strong, especially with the last starts I have left,” said Detmers. “Of course I’m giving it my all, but I’m trying to get my name out there again, make a statement and show everyone who I am.”

Drury hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the third inning, and Kavadas added another two-run home run, his third, in the sixth inning.

Kyle Farmer hit a home run for the Twins, who suffered 12 strikeouts and lost their fourth straight game. Minnesota has scored just 13 runs in six of its last seven games. The Twins are 6-15 in their last 21 games but remain in third place in the American League wild-card standings, three games ahead of the sidelined Detroit and Seattle.

“There are moments when you have a little trouble at the plate, and unfortunately that’s contagious for us right now. But hopefully we can get out of it tomorrow,” said Royce Lewis, who went 0 for 4 and hasn’t had a hit in his last 20 at-bats.

David Festa (2-6) allowed a two-run single by Nolan Schanuel in the first inning and a 459-foot home run by Drury in the third inning to give the Angels a 4-0 lead. Festa was replaced after four innings.

“The game was a little out of our reach from the beginning and we never managed to get to the moment where we could pull away. But we have to string together those good at-bats,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “It feels like we’re getting it done a little bit piecemeal. We have to do more as a group and get three, four, five good at-bats in a row.”

Carlos Santana had an RBI single for Minnesota in the third inning and Farmer hit a home run in the fourth before Kavadas hit a home run to right field against Ronny Henriquez in the sixth inning to extend the Angels’ lead to 6-2.

José Suarez, recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City on Monday, threw three hitless innings for his first career save. Since June 17, the Los Angeles relievers lead the majors with a 2.62 ERA.

“He was determined from the first pitch because his first pitch was 95. Usually he improves over time, but tonight he came out and started right away,” said Angels manager Ron Washington.
