Drought across the Green Country continues to worsen

Drought conditions continue to worsen across the Green Country as much of Oklahoma has seen little significant rainfall since late August.

Areas of extreme drought have occurred across much of far northeastern Oklahoma, with at least moderate drought conditions in a significant portion of the KTUL sighting area.

Significant precipitation has avoided much of northeastern Oklahoma over the past 30 days, as shown by observed totals across the Oklahoma mesonet.

Although some locations have recorded rainfall totals of more than 2 inches, rainfall across the Green Country is below normal everywhere over the last 30 days, and most are well below normal.

Some places received less than 10% of normal rainfall over the past 30 days.

As the summer pattern appears to be coming to an end thanks to the arrival of a strong cool front on Sunday, this front looks dry, leaving the next 5 days dry.

A potentially more promising pattern could emerge as early as next weekend (October 19-20), when a moist air mass is located over Oklahoma and could collide with a wave of energy and possibly an additional cooling front during that period. Although it is too early to determine locations, timing and totals, initial data suggests a wetter pattern will return to the Green Country as early as next week.
