Driver dies when pickup truck drives down an embankment and hits a tree, South Carolina cops say

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was killed late Monday night when a pickup truck left the road and struck a tree.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 11 p.m. in McCormick County, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said Wednesday. That’s near the Savannah River and the state line between South Carolina and Georgia.

A 1997 Ford pickup truck was traveling south on Resort Drive when it went off the right side of the road and down an embankment, Bolt said. The pickup truck then struck a tree and the driver died, Bolt said.

The identity of the driver has not been publicly released by the McCormick County Coroner’s Office.

Bolt said the driver was the only person in the pickup and no other injuries were reported.

There was no information about whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information on why the pickup truck left the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 534 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2024 through Sunday. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, the department reported.

According to DPS data, at least two people will be killed in traffic accidents in McCormick County in 2024.
