Recently, a brand new section of the ruins was opened to the public for the first time: Chichén Viejo, a secluded complex of villas and palatial temples that once belonged to the Mayan elite, including the 1,372-year-old stucco temple, among the oldest in the city.

The archaeological site is just 2 hours and 21 minutes from Cancun, about halfway between the resort area and the Yucatan capital, Merida. However, daily departures are limited.
