The Dolphins are preparing for the possibly extended absence of Tua Tagovailoa.

Miami signed former Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Browns’ practice squad after Tagovailoa suffered his fourth diagnosed concussion last week, NFL Network reported.

Skylar Thompson is expected to start Sunday’s away game against the Seahawks, but Huntley could potentially slide in, according to the report.

There is real uncertainty about whether the Dolphins will welcome Tagovailoa back this season – or ever again – after he suffered his third NFL concussion last Thursday against the Bills.

Some have called for him to retire, but according to NFL Network, Tagovailoa has no plans to do so. He has begun meeting with specialists about his future, the report added.

Until Tagovailoa can return, the Dolphins will try to stay afloat. And at least initially, Thompson will get the first chance while Huntley is waiting in the wings.

The Dolphins have former Jets quarterback Tim Boyle on their practice squad, but every Jets fan knows that’s not a realistic option.

Huntley, 26, has played in just 20 career games, throwing just eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, but he has shown during his time in Baltimore that he can run an offense.

There is a caveat, however, in that Huntley is a dual-threat quarterback and the Ravens could run a similar offense to the one they ran against Lamar Jackson when they get his time.

Tagovailoa is more of a traditional pocket passer and the Dolphins are built to beat their opponents with their star receivers and Mike McDaniel’s running system.

Huntley earned his Pro Bowl honors in 2022 when he appeared in six games (four starts), throwing two touchdowns and running for another.

He signed with the Browns this season before landing on their practice squad.

Whether Huntley starts will likely depend on how Thompson performs in the next few weeks.

The 2022 seventh-round pick appeared in eight games and threw just one touchdown over the course of his career, but Miami trusted him enough to part ways with former Jet Mike White this offseason.

The Dolphins (1-1) trail the undefeated Seahawks by 6.5 points at FanDuel.

“I did that all training camp and I thought what I saw in practice – what I saw in Skylar’s game, I wasn’t surprised. That was the high point,” McDaniel said in late August. “But you learn a lot when you keep the competition open until the last game, that’s when you get your last chance to do it, and Skylar impressed us with his technique, his fundamentals and his decision-making. What I saw was a guy who came in in the second quarter and took full advantage of every opportunity.”
