Dolphins sign Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley from Ravens as Tua Tagovailoa is out with concussion

With Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa out indefinitely due to a concussion, the Dolphins had to come up with a plan B. On Monday, Miami took a step and signed former Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.

The Dolphins now have two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster; Skylar Thompson will start on Sunday in Seattle.

Following Tagovailoa’s injury on Thursday night, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that Skylar Thompson would be the Dolphins’ QB1, but they would bring in an additional quarterback. It looks like Huntley is their man.

Huntley, who went undrafted out of Utah, played as a backup to Lamar Jackson for four years starting in 2020. In 2022, Jackson suffered an injury in Week 13 that sidelined him for the rest of the season, giving Huntley a chance to step in. The backup quarterback started five games, including one playoff game, and was nominated to the Pro Bowl for his performance.

Huntley signed with the Cleveland Browns in March and made the roster for the 2024 season, but was released in August. He then returned to the Ravens to join their practice squad, but will now sit on Miami’s bench for the foreseeable future.

McDaniel did not give an estimate of how long Tagovailoa will be out, saying they are giving him as much time as he needs to recover. Tagovailoa, who has suffered concussions in the past, is taking his time with his future plans but is not currently planning to end his career.

In the meantime, the Dolphins can rely on Thompson and Huntley to get through the season.
