Dolphins receive calls to DL Calais Campbell

One of the most accomplished defensive linemen of this era, Calais Campbell signed a one-year veteran minimum contract with the Dolphins this offseason. However, he may not complete the entire season in Miami.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini (subscription required) and ESPN’s Adam Schefter report that the Dolphins have received trade inquiries about Campbell, who has started all seven of the club’s games this season while recording a 57% snap share . During that time, he recorded two sacks, 22 tackles (seven TFL) and three passes defensed.

That superficial performance is backed up by an excellent overall grade of 86.4 from Pro Football Focus, which currently ranks Campbell as the fourth-best interior defender out of 122 qualified players. Given his performance and the fact that he’s due a pittance for the rest of the season, it’s easy to see why rival clubs would be interested in making a trade for extension.

For the same reason, the Dolphins would obviously like to keep Campbell to help them in their own playoff push. The problem is that the Fins are currently 2-5, third in the AFC East, and have just a 7% chance of qualifying for the postseason, according to NFL.com. Of course, the main reason for their poor record so far is the fact that they are quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa missed four entire games due to a concussion.

With Tagovailoa now back in the lineup, Miami — which entered the season as a legitimate contender — is hoping it can make a real push into the playoff field. That pursuit begins with today’s game against the division rival Bills, who currently have a record of 6-2.

Of course, if the Dolphins lose to Buffalo and fall to 2-6 this season, they will be more inclined to trade Campbell, as Schefter notes. If they lose, Miami would only have a 3% chance of making the playoffs, so a dealer move like selling a 38-year-old player on a one-year contract would be a pretty easy decision for GM Chris Grier make.
