Dolphins make Jalen Ramsey the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL

Jalen Ramsey is once again the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

Ramsey and the Miami Dolphins have agreed to a three-year, $72.3 million contract that includes $55.3 million in guaranteed salary, a person familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the deal.

With this contract extension, Ramsey becomes the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback by average annual salary, just days after Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II recalibrated the market.

The Dolphins are Ramsey’s third NFL team.

Ramsey was originally selected in the first round of the 2016 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent his first four years in Jacksonville before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. He played four seasons with the Rams and helped the franchise win Super Bowl 56 at their home stadium in Los Angeles. The Rams decided to trade Ramsey to Miami in 2023.

The cornerback suffered a knee injury during his first training camp in Miami, causing him to miss the start of the 2023 regular season. He ultimately played in 10 games in his first season in South Beach, recording 22 tackles, three interceptions and five pass deflections.

Ramsey has accumulated 474 tackles, 22 interceptions, 97 pass deflections and six forced fumbles in 118 regular season games. He has been selected to the All-Pro first team three times and to the Pro Bowl seven times.

Why Miami made Jalen Ramsey the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL

The 29-year-old cornerback has been one of the best cornerbacks in the league since his signing in 2016. He was the best cornerback in Jacksonville, Los Angeles and now in Miami.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver can play Ramsey on the outside or at the starting position. Ramsey may not be the best shutdown corner he was in years past, but he’s still capable of taking on the opposing team’s best receiver. He’s also one of the Dolphins’ team captains.

“If you talk about prototype cornerbacks, he’s one,” Weaver told reporters during the offseason. “Size, length, speed, competitiveness. I think he’s the ultimate chess piece. To just have him sit out there and play as a field corner or boundary corner or something like that is a disadvantage for him. We have to find ways to get him where he can be most effective. That’s our goal.”
