“Dodgers’ Roberts feels Mookie Betts gave Mets a ride in leaving Shohei Ohtani “personally” | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

NEW YORK, NY – OCTOBER 17: Mookie Betts #50 of the Los Angeles Dodgers rounds the bases after hitting a two-RBI in the sixth inning during Game 4 of the NLCS presented by LoanDepot between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets Home run hit at Citi Field on Thursday, October 17, 2024 in New York, New York. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes Mookie Betts’ standout performance in Game 4 of the NLCS may have been fueled by a sense of disrespect because the New York Mets walked Shohei Ohtani three times.

Roberts told reporters after the Dodgers’ 10-2 win that Betts took it “personally” that the Mets might have tried to avoid pitching to Ohtani.

“And that’s okay. That’s fine,” Roberts said. “And I think he understands that whether it’s a manager sticking four fingers up or throwing intentional balls that are two feet out, you’re going to go after the next guy. That’s why I think Mookie takes it personally, as all competitors should.” . And I think things like that light a little fire under him.”

None of the walks to Ohtani were intentional, but two of them were over four pitches. Betts took advantage of opportunities with at least one runner on base in front of him, going 4 for 6 with a double, a three-run homer and four RBI.

This postseason was an example of what makes the Dodgers so dangerous. Ohtani drew attention for his trouble with no runners on base, but he smashed the ball when someone got on.

Ohtani destroyed that narrative in Game 4 by hitting a home run off José Quintana. In six plate appearances, he reached base four times and scored four runs.

The Dodgers have scored at least eight runs in each of their three wins in the NLCS. They have allowed a total of nine runs in their last six playoff games, starting with Game 4 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign for the Dodgers over the last two games has been the performances of Walker Buehler and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Combined, they allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks with 14 strikeouts in 8.1 innings.

Given the depth of their lineup, especially with Ohtani and Betts at the helm, the Dodgers don’t need great starting pitching to win. They’ve gotten exactly what they need in the last two games and are just one win away from reaching the World Series for the first time since 2020.

The Dodgers can close out the NLCS in Game 5 on Friday when they send Jack Flaherty to the mound against Mets starter David Peterson at Citi Field.
