Doctor’s rape and murder hearing in Kolkata LIVE: Supreme Court hears suo moto case today

TThe Supreme Court will today resume hearing of the suo motu case registered in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud had earlier directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) to appoint a nodal officer to remove social media posts in accordance with its earlier directions the identity of the victim is revealed. The National Task Force (NTF) appointed by the court was also directed to submit its interim report on the next hearing date, i.e. October 15. The NTF was tasked with elaborating the modalities of security measures that could be introduced for medical professionals.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet naming Sanjoy Roy as the sole accused in the case. The accused, a civil police volunteer, was arrested by the Kolkata Police before the CBI took over the investigation in the case.

The August 9 incident sparked nationwide protests, with young doctors and the public taking to the streets demanding justice for the victim and a safe workplace for medical professionals. Junior doctors at government hospitals have been on hunger strike since October 5 to ensure justice for the deceased doctor.

Other demands include setting up a central referral system for all hospitals and medical colleges in the state, implementing a system to monitor vacant beds and forming task forces to ensure necessary provision of CCTV, on-call rooms and washrooms at their workplaces.
